Bikes
by Timothy
70 percent of New Hampshire people buy bikes, but what if they wanted
bikes to cost less? If bikes costed from $70-$150 people would be happier
and tell their friends.
It’s great to have bikes, since you get a workout and have lots
of fun. It’s one of the best forms of transportation while exercising
for people then just driving. It might take a while to get where you want,
but it saves you money. Biking is great for the environment because it
doesn’t do as much as cars do to global warming. Say for example
mountain bikes, they can go some places where cars can’t, like up
mountains, or an easier way to get to a camp site.
It would be nice if bikes came with non-expensive tools. If a bike broke
down, then the owner would need the proper tools to fix the bike. Not
just any tools, tools that only work for the certain bike they buy. Customers
would be happy, companies would be happy and get a little extra money.
Sometimes, bike chains get rusty, if you could have some non-expensive
rust remover with bikes, that can help improve bikes. If kids on their
bikes or adults don’t pay attention to the chain at all, it could
be almost impossible to fix anymore, unless you buy an expensive bike
chain.
The bike industry is the only one who can lower the prices and make tools
for bikes to keep people happier and satisfied with your stores. The companies
that get your bikes can make a difference for everybody.
Cell Phones
by Lucas
Cell phones can be dangerous. Talking on your phone while driving is
one of the leading causes of crashes. Harvard researchers have found that
about one in every twenty car crashes are connected to cell phones. They
have also found that drivers are four times more likely to crash while
talking on the phone than people who don’t. That is an average of
about 2,600 humans dying yearly!
There is a lot of talk going around about banning talking while driving.
In fact, there are 23 states and Washington D.C. that have banned, have
partially banned or are debating on whether to ban talking on a non hands-free
cell phone! That is almost half of the country, and New Hampshire is one
of those partially banned states! 51 major countries around the world
have banned talking on a regular cell phone! If 51 countries around the
world have banned it, shouldn’t the United States do it too?
There are a lot of things that drivers can do to stop crashing. Americans
can: not talk while driving, talk when outside of a car, or use a hands-free
phone. People could also stay focused on the road when driving!
People are the only ones who can stop crashing. Drivers can lower the
crash rating a lot by abolishing talking while driving. The world can
be a safer place!
Moose Hunting
By Joshua
Moose eat weeds and plants that could overgrow a pond and turn into a
bog. Moose can eat up to 25 pounds of brush every day to keep the forests
clean. These are some important reasons for limiting moose hunting.
Around the world over 100,000 moose die each year. 40,000 moose are born
each year. There are more moose dying each year than being born. Wolves
and bears kill around 2/3 of the population each year. The last one third
dies from disease, natural causes and hunting. The moose population goes
down 60,000 thousand every year partly because man hunts the moose. 300,000
moose will die in 5 years.
What can people do to help the moose? Reduce the number of licenses given
out each year, cut down the land that people can hunt on and when you
see a sign “brake for moose,” brake for moose. You should
save the moose.
Giant Pandas
By Emily
Giant Pandas are great animals that live in parts of China and should
be saved from extinction. There are fewer than 1,000 pandas in the world.
Pandas have been dying for the past couple of years from the decrease
of bamboo and the increase of poaching.
The number of pandas is decreasing in size. Pandas are dying from starvation.
Their main food source is bamboo. Bamboo has been dying off and harvested
for use in cooking and as a building material. Bamboo takes about 20 years
to grow back.
Some people suspect that poachers are killing pandas and selling their
skins for more then $200,000. Poachers could receive the death penalty
for killing Giant Pandas. Poachers set traps for musk deer, but sometimes
Giant Pandas get caught in the traps and die.
Humans cause about one-fourth of the Giant Panda deaths. The other three-fourths
are old age, starvation, and deforestation. People can try to inform higher
authorities about Giant Pandas. People can build a preserve for pandas
and keep them until the are old enough to take care of themselves. Also
humans could start a reserve in the wild for Giant Pandas so that they
could live for a longer time.
Giant Pandas are an endangered species that should be saved from starvation
and poaching, the two worst things that happen to them. 60% of the pandas
are in zoos, if people from all over the country protest, maybe we can
start a preserve that is in their habitat, but is safer then what it was
before.
SAVE THE WOLVES
By P.J.
There are just three wolf species in America. There were only 3,063
wolves in America in 2002. Wolves are dying, being killed, and facing
extinction. Wolves help keep the population of large animals balanced.
Wolves should be saved.
Most of the fairy tales that people read have led them to thinking that
wolves are man-eating beasts. All these thoughts have led people to…
KILLING THEM!!!!!! Shooting has made these wolves dwindle to a couple
hundred at one point. Wolves have made a comeback since then, but not
enough. People are still hunting and trapping them.
Wolves’ habitats are being cut down by careless loggers and some
people don’t even care!!!! While logging is happening, wolves will
have to keep going to places they are not used to. They die because of
the conditions they don’t understand or can’t adapt to. That
is another way they are dying.
Wolves help balance the population of large animals. If they become extinct
there will be too many large animals. If there are no more wolves in America,
moose and deer will start to be an animal you see every day!!!
People can stop the dwindling number of wolves by doing a lot of things,
here are some; stop littering or doing anything else that can harm wildlife;
stop hunting, trapping, or doing anything that could hurt a wolf; or write
business letters to law makers. Those are just some of the ways you can
help. The biggest way to make a change is help a zoo or wolf reproduction
center to put wolves back into the North American forests.
Wolves should be saved. If people stop doing all the things that have
been done in the past they could be thriving again. They are NOT man eating
animals either. Wolves help maintain the number of large animals. They
are great mammals that have been on earth much longer than us, so help
save the wolves!!!!
Recess
By Malcolm
The Jackson Grammar School kids should have more recess. On average there
are only fifteen minutes in a snack recess and twenty five minutes in
a lunch recess each day. Recess is a time when kids have more freedom
to choose what they want to do and whom to play or do it with.
Lately, some groups of adults in other states have been cutting down
recess time because they think that it effects the children’s learning
abilities, but it doesn’t! Research has been made to support the
kids and has revealed that recess benefits the child’s brain by
making more brain cells.
Out of the ten million kids in the United States, one out of every five
of them is overweight. That’s two million kids. The Surgeon General
recommends that overweight kids have sixty minutes of physical activity
every single day. Another study says that most kids go home and play video
games or get on the computer. The physical activity should be at school.
Since schools have less recess, the activity minutes are getting lower
and lower. Some teachers think that kids should stay in for recess to
finish work or as a punishment, but the experts say that’s wrong.
On the other hand, if kids had more recess then it would remove some
of the stress that children have in the classroom. The experts also say
that at recess, children resolve conflicts and problems, which is true
for us at Jackson Grammar School. At physical education class, kids exercise
but it’s only once a week, but some schools don’t have it
at all. Another study shows that in 1998, fourth graders were more on-task
and less fidgety on the days they had recess.
Kids deserve more recess and there is plenty of interesting information
and research studies to prove it. The thing that makes me happy is that
some scientists out there believe in recess and that they took the time
to make a study on it. Thank you.
Save the Tigers
By Vincent
Tigers are big cats, not fluffy, but BIG CATS!!! The only problems are
that tigers are becoming extinct because of poaching and habitat loss.
Most tigers live in Asia, Russia, West India, Sumatra, and China.
Every day a tiger is killed by a poacher. Poachers kill tigers for tiger
parts for medicine and to clear land for building new homes. People are
taking tigers’ homes and killing tigers and tiger cubs just so they
can have a fancy home. Tigers are an umbrella species, which means to
save them; we must save habitat and prey. There are some laws to stop
this. Half of most killing is done by poachers killing for the tiger parts.
Another part of of the killing is destroying their habitat. Tigers are
becoming extinct because the Chinese use tiger parts as medicine. Since
the trade for tiger parts has been forced underground, one tiger body
can mean as much as ten years’ pay.
Unbelievably three of the eight subspecies are extinct. The Bali tiger
met its demise in the 1940's, the Caspian in the 1970's and the Javan
in the 1980's. The only species that are alive are the South China tiger,
Amur (Siberian) tiger, Sumatran tiger, Indochinese tiger, and the Bengal
tiger. We could lose these wild tigers in as little as five year’s
time. There are twice as many captive tigers in the USA than there are
anywhere in the wild.
Tigers are at the top of the food chain. The only predator they have is
man kind. Man is causing the tigers to become extinct. There are ways
to help stop this. One big way is that people are enforcing laws against
tiger killing. Another way to save the tigers is to help fund reserves.
You can also send a donation to www.savethetigerfund.org .
Do what you can to help SAVE THE TIGER, make donations to help the reserves.
As the tigers are dying, so is our love for this plain and simple animal.
Tigers are animals that cannot be replaced, so that is why we most help
save the tiger.
